Jun 16: Bookworm

Tell us about the last book you read (Why did you choose it? Would you recommend it?). To go further, write a post based on its subject matter.

It may seem like I didn’t understand the assignment (LOL, for all of you, Drag Race fans out there.) – trust me, I did. But instead of talking about the last book I read, I will talk about not having one. Or maybe try to explain why. I have definitely started several books – I have 9 books on my “currently reading” least since 2013 – that is crazy. My Goodreads account says the last book I finished was on Apr 20, 2017. That is over 3 years ago. I have not finished a book in 3 years and that is really shocking to me. Since I discovered Goodreads in 2011, I participated in the Goodreads Reading Challenge annually where you need to finish 50 books (that’s the norm but you can set your own target) and I have surpassed that for 3 consecutive years, even reading up to 63 books in one year. But gone are those days. It’s so hard for me to focus on reading these past few years. For someone who likes to read (or used to), this is just so disappointing. I really don’t have that attention span anymore to keep reading. I bring books during trips but you know, you only get a few hours of downtime during these travels so I finish a few chapters, but I don’t really get to finish them.

What’s my excuse? What has changed for me since 2017 that may have caused this? Travelling? I have been travelling years before this, so nope, that’s not it. Dating? I think this may have affected that a bit. Too busy? I really don’t think so. Too lazy? Most likely. Other hobbies? Maybe, but I have always watched a lot of TV series and movies even then. Or maybe because my friends and I don’t really exchange recommendations anymore. Maybe I really just lost interest. Maybe I need to change the genre of the books I’m reading. Maybe I should go from fiction to non-fiction. There are so many reasons and excuses that I can think of but I know that I can overcome this. I can totally take a few hours of my day to read something. Finish a few chapters instead of watching random videos on Youtube.

I have also been reading some of my old book reviews recently and man, I really enjoyed reading then to the point that I would take the extra time to review them. Some of them are really long, too. I want to go back to that! I want to read and review stuff! I want to highlight my favorite lines, quote them, and react to them. I just want to be active on Goodreads again!

So I have made a decision to jumpstart my love for reading again. Since we’re still in mid-June and have the rest of the year left, I have challenged myself to finish at least 7 books this year. I know, such an odd number, but the first year I did this challenge on Goodreads, I only did 12 for 12 months and I’m starting this again that same way.

Wish me luck! 🙂 (Ok, I also said this when I said I will start 365 Days of Writing Prompts. LOL.)

Inspired by this ebook, “365 Days of Writing Prompts” posted here.
