Jun 3: Tourist Trap

What’s your dream tourist destination — either a place you’ve been and loved, or a place you’d love to visit? What about it speaks to you?

Ok, this is a tough one. I like to travel so definitely, there are so many places I would love to explore someday. And I feel like, it has changed over the years. For example, at some point in my life, Maldives was like one of the top destinations for me but now, I don’t feel as passionate about that place anymore. Although, don’t get me wrong, given the chance to go, I would do it in a heartbeat!

So I guess, this will be a two-parter, a dream destination I have been to and loved and a dream destination I would love to visit. But seriously, I’m struggling to answer the question. LOL.

I have truly enjoyed some of the places I have visited but there are two destinations are just so special to me and those would be Japan and Laos. I first visited Japan in February of 2017 and it was during winter so that was really something special. Living in a tropical country, of course, I have always wanted to experience snow, and I did that during this trip. We booked a flight to Nagoya and travelled to different other cities / towns including Takayama, then booked a tour to Shirakawa-go Village. Shirakawa-go Village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is a winter wonderland! I was editing my Japan blogs recently so I was seeing the photos again and it was just so amazing and beautiful and it was totally a postcard moment. It was one of the best experiences of my life so far. That trip actually ended on a not-so-triumphant note – we missed our flight, had to stay in the airport for 24 hours and had to pay PHP14k for a new ticket going home. We’ve done a 24-hour challenge before it was even a thing, LOL. But looking back, it’s a good story to tell people, despite my bank account crying at the time. And I don’t know, that experience also made this whole trip so unforgettable. I have been to Japan twice so far and I have another trip scheduled early next year (in winter again!) so I hope that pushes through. *fingers crossed*

In November 2016, I was able to visit Laos and it was a trip that took two years to plan so it was another memorable one. We were inspired by this Korean TV show and that’s basically where we patterned our trip from. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well. I think it was the capital of French Laos and that is evident in the architecture, and everything is just so pretty. (Totally Hanoi’s twin for me, but I like Luang Prabang more!) Vang Vieng gives me that gap year feels, it’s so chill and perfect for backpacking. This is a trip where we totally just lazed around the entire time, and ate really good but inexpensive food. We had an itinerary but just went with what we felt like doing on a given day. We had days where we totally had nothing to do but walk around or watch Friends at a restaurant all day. I definitely want to do this again. There are so many other beautiful places in Laos that we haven’t explored, so I know that it’s worth going back to someday.

Like I said, my dream destination changes from time to time. It depends on what I’m into at the moment. Or like what I watch or what I read or what I see online. I guess, my current dream destination would be Slovenia. The image on this post is a church in the middle of a Lake Bled, a photo of this same church is also my current phone wallpaper (Disclaimer: Not this same image). A friend of mine sent it to me a few days ago and I just can’t help but use it because it is beyond beautiful. He’s been sending me photos for the past few years and I have always been speechless because each one just seems so surreal. On random days, he would send me photos of a castle in his city, or of him paddleboarding in the water in the middle of town, or of him walking in nature just picking berries on the sidewalk. I want to experience all of that! Slovenia is a small country in Europe with just 2 million people, and is mostly countryside and forests. Just a side note as well, their government isn’t perfect (like most are, it was pretty controversial recently, actually) but they were the first country in Europe that was said to have conquered COVID-19. So yeah, it has totally gotten into my radar and I would love to see it myself. Since I have been reading about Schengen visa for a while now, hopefully I can visit this small but beautiful hidden gem in the near future.
